Using chamomile, clary sage, lavender, lemon, lemon eucalyptus, lemon verbena, marjoram, melissa (lemon balm), myrtle, and petitgrain (a citrus-related plant) may help relieve pain through relaxation.
Aromatherapy essential oils have powerful effects on your moods, as the part of the brain that detects smell messages from the nose (olfactory bulbs) is closely linked with your emotional centre in a part of the brain called the limbic system. Oils are also absorbed from the skin into the circulation and can have powerful effects on the body. Even Hippocrates, the Greek father of medicine, recommended the use of aromatic essential oils for their relaxing properties.

Some essential oils are so relaxing that they help to promote sleep, especially geranium, juniper, lavender, neroli, lemongrass, sandalwood and ylang ylang. Try sprinkling a few drops of your chosen oil(s) on a cotton-wool pad or hanky and tucking it under your pillow. Alternatively, scent your bedroom with an oil using a burner. However, the oils need to be varied every four or five days to maintain their beneficial effect, as your body and brain start to adapt to them.

Ways to use them effectively

Aromatherapy essential oils may be inhaled, massaged into the skin for example for legs pains, added to bath water, or heated in a variety of ways to perfume the atmosphere. Oils that come into contact with skin should always be diluted with a carrier oil (eg, almond, avocado, jojoba, sunflower, wheatgerm oils). Dilution is important, as oils that are too concentrated may have an adverse effect or cause skin irritation.

Sleep-promoting oils  - including bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, frankincense, geranium, lavender, melissa, mandarin, neroli (orange blossom), rose, sandalwood, and tangerine - can be inhaled, rubbed on the skin with massage oil or lotion, or used in bath water.
Insomnia is habitual sleeplessness, repeated night after night. This means either being unable to fall asleep when you go to bed, or waking up and not being able to get back to sleep. Insomnia can result from a wide variety of causes such as stress, physical pain, breathing problems, depression or caffeine consumption but is generally not as harmless as it is frustrating.

Treatments for depression are aimed at revitalizing the body and mind and lifting the spirits to promote a sense of wellbeing with beautiful scents. Invigorating oils help to awaken the body and mind.

Essential oils are concentrated, volatile liquids derived from the leaves, barks, roots, flowers, resins, or seeds of some seven hundred plants. They are produced principally by steam distillation and are sold in small quantities, typically an ounce or less. Because essential oils are so potent, only a few drops are needed to treat most conditions.
Herbalists and aromatherapists apply essential oils topically, usually after dilution, through massage, compresses, or by adding them to a bath. Essential oils are also inhaled by dispersing a few drops in liquid that is then sprayed in a mist or evaporated to create steam. Essential oils are rarely taken orally and then only under the supervision of a knowledgeable practitioner. They affect the psyche by influencing mood, emotions, and sexual arousal or relaxation, and they affect the body by promoting the healing of wounds, clearing lung congestion, and relieving pain.
